Latest Google Meet Update Makes Note-Taking Effortless
Google is making that easier than ever. In a new update rolling out this February 2026, Google is introducing enhanced user controls for the "Take notes for me" feature in Google Meet. This update is all about transparency and giving users the power to manage AI participation before the meeting even starts.
What is the "Take Notes for Me" Feature?
For those who haven't used it yet, Take notes for me is a Gemini-powered feature in Google Meet that automatically transcribes the conversation and summarizes key takeaways into a Google Doc. While it is a massive productivity booster, users have asked for clearer indicators and more control over when the AI is active.
The Feature: New Green Room Transparency
The biggest change happens in the Google Meet Green Room, the screen where you check your hair and test your mic before joining a call.
No more guessing if a meeting is being recorded or summarized. When "Take notes for me" is enabled, you will now see a prominent notice in the Green Room. This ensures every participant is fully aware that an AI-generated summary will be created for the session.
Why This is Good for Users
This update solves a few critical pain points for modern professionals:
- Enhanced Privacy: You no longer have to join a meeting to find out it's being summarized. You get the "heads up" early, allowing you to prepare or request changes.
- Eliminated Awkwardness: Turning off notes after everyone has started talking can be disruptive. Disabling it in the Green Room keeps the meeting flow professional.
- Informed Participation: By making the notice more prominent, Google ensures that "Take notes for me" remains a tool for collaboration rather than a surprise guest.
Who Can Access These New Controls?
The rollout began on February 18, 2026, and is available to the following Google Workspace editions:
- Business Standard and Plus
- Enterprise Standard and Plus
- Google AI Pro for Education
- Frontline Plus
There are no admin controls for this feature; it is an end-user update designed to put more power directly into the hands of meeting participants.
As AI assistants become a standard part of our work lives, transparency is the key to trust. With these new Green Room controls, Google Meet is proving that AI can be both a powerful secretary and a respectful participant.
