Gmail End-to-End Encryption Arrives on Mobile

For organizations handling ultra-sensitive data, the mobile office has always come with a security asterisk. That changed on April 9, 2026, when Google announced that Gmail end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is now available on Android and iOS devices.

1. Native Security, Anywhere

Previously a web-only luxury, E2EE is now baked directly into the mobile experience:

• Native App Integration: You can now compose, read, and manage encrypted messages directly within the Gmail app. There’s no need to switch to a secure browser or use a clunky third-party portal.
• Lock and Key: To secure a message, simply tap the lock icon while composing. This ensures that only you and the recipient have the keys to read the content not even Google can access it.
• Universal Reach: You can send an encrypted message to any recipient, regardless of their email provider.

2. The Guest Experience

Google has streamlined how non-Gmail users interact with these secure messages:

• Gmail-to-Gmail: The message appears as a standard, secure thread in the recipient's inbox.
• Non-Gmail Recipients: If the recipient doesn't use Gmail, they are guided to a secure browser interface where they can read and reply to the message without compromising the encryption chain.

3. Admin & Setup Requirements

• Admins: This feature is not automatic. Admins must enable the Android and iOS clients within the CSE admin interface in the Admin Console.
• End Users: Once enabled by IT, users will see the lock icon in their compose window. Toggling "Additional Encryption" will activate the E2EE mode.
• Availability: This high-level security is reserved for Enterprise Plus customers who have the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-ons.
